The
Dales Way leads across some of the most splendid
countryside in the
Yorkshire Dales National Park and ends on the shores
of Britain's largest lake, Windermere, at Bowness
in the romantic Lake District.
Beginning at the 'Old Bridge' in the stone
town of Ilkley, the Dales Way largely follows river
tracks, starting
with the River Wharfe and leading to its source on
Cam Fell at 1700ft.
The Augustinian Bolton Priory is a memorable site along
the early stages of the walk, with the charismatic villages
of Burnsall, Buckden Grassington, Kettlewell following soon
afterward as the trail moves on through the limestone landscapes
of Upper Wharfedale.
Beyond Cam Fell and some of the most rugged parts of the Pennines moors, the trail follows the River Dee through the delightful village of Dent, featuring its typical Yorkshire cobbled streets, to the old market town of
Sedbergh,
which lies between the slopes of the Howgill Fells
near the River Lune. At Sedbergh, the Dales Way moves
away from the Yorkshire Dales and on towards the mountains
of the Lake District splendidly lining the horizon,
passing through picturesque sheep-farming country and
ending on the edge of Windermere's famed waters.
On this itinerary we recommend a half-day's break in the
market town of Sedbergh in the Western Dales. Full of character
with cobbled yards and historic houses, Sedbergh has several
quality galleries and craft shops to browse and an art and
heritage centre to visit. There is a good range of shops
and places to eat. Sedbergh has a fine Norman church dating
from around 1130, and is well known for its public school
founded in 1525. In the 18th century Bonnie Prince Charlie
reputedly hid in the chimney of what is now the town chemist
during his retreat north. Sedbergh is also an emerging book
town.
