The Llangollen Round is an exhilarating
walking holiday over the summits and hilltops encircling
the beautiful Vale of Llangollen on the Welsh borders.
The 33 mile circular route takes you through
a huge variety of interesting scenery and countryside and
the views are terrific. Snowdon and the mountains of North
Wales to the Shropshire Hills can be seen in the distance.
Large areas of the hillsides are AONB and protected SSSI’s.
You walk through open heather moorland, along dramatic limestone
cliffs, woodlands, old drover’s trails, along sections
of Offa’s Dyke Path and quiet country lanes. You may
see curlews, golden plover, peregrine, merlin, and the elusive
black grouse, suddenly startling you as it flutters loudly
out of the heather.
Below you the River Dee carves its way through the lovely
Dee Valley, towards the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct,
recently added to the list of World Heritage sites (now
ranking alongside the Great Wall of China!).
The aqueduct, part of the Llangollen canal
linking Shropshire and North Wales began in 1795 and has
a 1,007ft span, stretching 127ft above the Dee Valley.
You stay in the old border market town
of Llangollen where the River Dee flows under it’s
13C bridge. The ancient town is famous for its International
musical Eisteddfod held every year. You can visit Plas Newydd,
the fascinating little Welsh Manor House of the Ladies of
Llangollen, or visit nearby Chirk Castle with its outstanding
gardens.
The Llangollen Round is suitable for all
walking ages and can completed in 2, 3 or 4 days according
to your daily preferences.
Celtic Trails will take and collect you
each day the short distance to and from your location on
the Round.
