Walking the Wye Valley Walk – Independent walking holidays with Celtic Trails Walking Holidays
The Wye Valley Walk is an easy grade continuous walking trail that follows the river valley from Chepstow to Rhayader and continuing to its source near Pumlumon in the hills above Aberystwyth.
The 136 mile (218km) route criss-crosses the lower border between Wales and England through a wonderful variety of scenery. There are few sections that could be called strenuous as you walk through the dramatic limestone gorges that characterize the Wye valley, through the rolling countryside of Herefordshire and amongst the remote green uplands of Mid-Wales.
Along the way you may just see red kites and peregrines, and around river bends be surprised by herons, cormorants, kingfisher and salmon jumping out of the water. The walk is characterised by its areas of ‘outstanding natural beauty’ and sites of ‘specific scientific interest’ rich in rare plant life.
You take in stunning early medieval Tintern Abbey along your route, and old historic towns and villages – Monmouth , Hereford, with its famous Cathedral and Mappi Mundi, Goodrich Castle, and a day in the famous old book town of Hay on Wye, are just a few of the many interesting places you can experience along the way.
